The summer tanager is a songbird, the male being entirely red with a slightly darker wing. But here the bird has an appliqued wing that is a slightly lighter shade of red, just to switch things up. The stitching on the bird is in a variegated gold and brown thread to highlight the tanager's feathers.
Surrounding the bird are collaged papers and fabrics with machine quilting lines and hand embellishing details of french knots and a few small beads and buttons.
